Hijama(Cupping) — Advise and Benefits During Ramadan الحجامة – نصائح وفوائد في رمضان

Hijama (Cupping) is a traditional Arabic medical therapy, similar to cupping therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It remains one of the most widely practiced treatments in Arabic traditional medicine, alongside herbal remedies and cauterization.

Since the Islamic Prophet Muhammad highly recommended this bloodletting therapy, many Arabs undergo Hijama at least once a year, even without any illness, as a preventive health measure—much like observing Ramadan.

Many people have questions: is it possible to perform cupping during Ramadan? You will find the answer in this article.

Can I perform cupping during Ramadan?

Yes, it is. The Messenger of Allah (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) initially prohibited cupping during fasting, as reported in the hadith of Shaddād bin Aws (radiyallāhu ‘anhu). However, he later permitted it, indicating that the prohibition was lifted.

Most scholars and three of the four major Islamic jurists agree that, based on the hadith of Anas (radiyallāhu ‘anhu), cupping does not break the fast. This suggests that while it was initially forbidden, it was later allowed, and Anas himself underwent cupping while fasting. Therefore, cupping does not invalidate fasting.

However, people with anemia should avoid cupping while fasting. They may wait until the call to prayer (Maghrib), undergo cupping, and then break their fast.

For those who undergo cupping while fasting, it is recommended to drink a glass of water with a small amount of pure honey and apple cider vinegar when breaking the fast.

The benefits of cupping during Ramadan

Cupping can be a beneficial practice during Ramadan, enhancing well-being and complementing the spiritual significance of the holy month. Since cupping is more effective when toxins are closest to the skin’s surface—often influenced by lunar cycles—it may be particularly beneficial during this time. This is especially relevant in times of global health concerns, emphasizing overall well-being.

Experts recommend cupping during Ramadan to maintain physical and mental balance

Natural detoxification is valuable for those who feel fatigued, stressed, restricted, or unable to concentrate before Ramadan. Cupping, as a classic complementary medical therapy, can serve as a healing source when applied correctly. It helps eliminate toxins from the body and promotes both mental and physical balance, allowing individuals to maintain better health during Ramadan.

Cupping is one of the oldest healing techniques. Undergoing cupping can help restore balance lost over the past 11 months, ensuring better health and equilibrium. It is a highly effective approach to holistic well-being.
